(4740) Sprinkler (rotating)
An apparatus for applying irrigation water, in which a jet rotates around a vertical axis. The rotation may be caused by gears driven by a turbine actuated by the discharge of the sprinkler or by an oscillating arm that is driven outside its equilibrium position when the jet coming out of the nozzle hits a slanting part (paddle) and that is brought back to its position of equilibrium under the effect of a torsional spring. Each impact of the arm rotates the sprinkler through a small fraction of a circle. Sprinkler may be designed for full circle (360 degree), or part-circle coverage, by provision of a reversing mechanism. A sprinkler may be provided with one or more nozzles. In the case of a double nozzle, the bigger one, called range nozzle, throws the water farthest from the sprinkler head. The smaller one applies water nearest to the sprinkler head.
